Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation visits Covab
Hon. Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation visited the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-Security on 4th April, 2017. The purpose of the visit was to familiarize with projects supported under the presidential initiative for science and technology.
During the visit, Dr. Tumwesigye was taken on a tour led by Prof. John David Kabasa, the Principal COVAB showing him the various facilities at the college. Later, Prof. Kabasa made a presentation before the minister explaining the SPEDA Model of education and community transformation, which was followed by an exhibition of various value chain commodities by AFRISA students.
During his presentation, Prof. Kabasa explained that graduates of the SPEDA program are organized into networks and industrial clusters. He added that a SPEDA Online Assessment System (OAS) was developed to monitor and evaluate development interventions as well as assess businesses.
Dr. Tumwesigye noted that since there is a high rate of unemployment among the youth in Uganda, the SPEDA Model should be sold to other universities so that students are trained to start their own business enterprises and become job creators rather than job seekers.
