CoVAB hosts public presentations for prospective leaders
The public presentation of candidates for the post of Principal and Deputy Principal in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio Security was successfully conducted in the Bio security centre, Tuesday 7th December 2021.
The event organized by the Search Committee for Principals and Deputy Principals 2021 was attended by a large following both physical and online.
The contenders for the position of the Principal included Prof. Charles Waiswa, Prof. Frank Mwine and Associate Professor Samuel Majalija. The candidates for the post of Deputy Principal included Dr. Clovince Kankya, Dr. James Okwee, Dr. Savino Biryomumaisho and Dr. Sylvia Angubua Baluka.
The candidates presented their manifesto clearly stating what they intended to bring into the management of CoVAB if given an opportunity to serve as Principal and Deputy Principal. They clearly gave an exposition of the situation of teaching and learning highlighting the achievements to date, the challenges and gaps as well as illustrating the best ways possible in ensuring that they build on the existing strength of the College towards realizing the desirable levels.
During their submission in the public hearing one of the final phases of selecting the leaders, the Candidates appreciated the previous leadership of the College for the tremendous growth realized over time. They however raised a number of issues they wanted to be addressed such as increased investment in infrastructure for teaching and research facilities necessary for the core veterinary and Bio medical training inclusive of the research centers. The revamping of the Journal was also emphasized by all, as well as recruitment of staff with other qualifications like Medical Doctors to address the changing learning terrain in the College.
The other issues included the need for Internalization of the College through accreditation of the summer school, as well as strengthening international collaboration. In the area of teaching and learning, the need for increased staff and student interactions was noted, as well as developing a learner centered program and making it a point that the products churned out are commensurate with the need in the industry.
Mr. John Chris Ninsiima the chairperson of the search committee 2021 informed the gathering that the public presentations by the candidates were reached at after a series of stages in the appointment process. He noted that the exercise was interrupted by the lock down due to COVID-19. The process he said, started with an invitation for intending candidates to apply for the positions, followed by the normal recruitment process that included face to face interviews. He said that the candidates presented in the public discourse were all qualifying for the respective positions and that this phase was aimed at giving an opportunity for the people in the College get to learn of their plans for steering the unit to greater heights. He asked the rest of the College staff to support the candidates that will be selected at the end of the exercise.
The event was attended by the outgoing Principal, Prof. David Kabasa and members of the search committee that included Ms. Doreen Nyanjura, Mr. Jude Mbabaali, Hon. Dan Kidega, Dr. Hellen Nkabala as well as Dr. Marion Alina who moderated the session.
